International Young Writers Prize

What is the International Young Writers Prize?

Hunger Mountain is pleased to announce its new International Young Writers Prize! This contest is open to all high school writers, and all genres of creative writing: fiction, nonfiction, poetry, and writing for children. Our goal with this prize is to foster the next generation of creative writers, and to encourage young people to make their voices heard.

What will the winner receive?

One first place winner receives $100 and online publication. Finalist names will be listed online, as well.

Who can enter the contest?

Any high school writer – residing in any country or U.S. state – is eligible to enter.

Who is this year’s judge?

Students in Vermont College of Fine Arts’ MFA Program in Writing & Publishing will judge submissions and choose an overall winner, as well as a finalist in each genre.

When is the deadline?

The deadline for 2019 is March 1.

Does Hunger Mountain accept electronic entries?

Yes! We use Submittable. We accept, per entry:

  • One short story up to 5,000 words.
  • One creative nonfiction essay up to 5,000 words.
  • Three poems uploaded in one document.
  • A piece of writing for children up to 5,000 words.

Your name and address should NOT appear on the submission document, as we read contest entries blind. Click the link below to access our submission manager. There is no entry fee for this prize.

Note: Languages in translation will also be considered.

Does Hunger Mountain still accept entries via snail mail?

We only accept postal mail in exceptional circumstances; please query Editor Erin Stalcup at erin.stalcup@vcfa.edu if you have a situation that requires you to mail your submission.

Are simultaneous submissions okay?

Yes, but please let us know right away if your work is accepted elsewhere. And, unfortunately, we cannot refund entry fees if the work is accepted elsewhere.

May I submit more than one piece for the contest?

Yes, but please limit your submissions to one entry per genre category.

Are previously published entries eligible?

No. We only accept original, unpublished work for the contest.

What if I have a question that’s not answered here?
